Euro Steel Drak Descent
© Southern Drakensberg Information - 2014
The race is held in conjunction with the ever popular Drak Challenge annual canoe marathon, allowing riders in the Drak Descent to ride alongside the Umzimkulu river and its tributaries on both days.
The course follows small tributaries of the Umzimkulu river and starts at the Restmount Children’s Home at 7:00am down towards Underberg where the finish will be at the Swartberg Bridge. A distance of around 46 kilometres.
The start of day 2 is at Sani Spoors, 2 km's along the Drak Gardens road at 07:00am. Past Underberg, through to the Umzimkulu River Lodge. The canoe marathon ends at the same place. Around 40 kilometres of riding and 400 metres of climbing.
This is an annual ride only and much of the route is on private or EKZN Wildlife property (part of a World Heritage Site), beautiful surroundings and some steep hills. The race is held in the afternoon thunder-storm season in the Drakensberg and is a warm time of year and is definitely not for the inexperienced or beginner.
